Senior Editor - Public Relations and Communications

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking an individual to edit and write content targeting VRS employers, members and retirees via the VRS website, enewsletters, email, and print communications in support of agency initiatives, legislative mandates and public relations and communications efforts.

This position serves as senior editor for content produced by team members and other business units; heads special projects and communications campaigns targeting employers and members; develops measurement benchmarks to evaluate effectiveness of public relations campaigns/outreach efforts and prepares reports; coordinates with external vendors.

In addition, this person is responsible for overseeing the VRS Facebook editorial calendar, monitoring posts and evaluating the platform’s effectiveness for VRS messaging. This position also assumes a supervisory role for the other writers on the team when the Communications Manager is out of the office.   

Qualifications include demonstrated experience and proficiency in writing, editing and proofreading, conforming to Associated Press (AP) style as well as agency style and standards.  Experience in developing web, email, social media and print communications; public relations and strategic communications planning and execution; digital analytics desirable.

Abilities to work with a high degree of independence, meet deadlines, use good judgment and organize and prioritize work while managing multiple projects; demonstrated skill in comprehending complex topics, such as statutory requirements and procedure directives, and translating these into content for action by a lay audience.

Highly proficient with MS Office; proficient with desktop publishing software, email software and analytics tools. Bachelor’s degree in mass communications, public relations, journalism or closely related field expected; four years of demonstrated communication experience or equivalent of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
Hiring Range:  $45,591 - $58,000
